Rewiring The Brain
By Don Shetterly

Article written for the Powerful Intentions Forum

From the article:

Learning somatic awareness is about developing parts of your brain that have been lying dormant.  It is a skill that has to be practiced over and over to potentiate, or re-wire, the brain. -  Dr. Paul Canali, (EvolutionaryHealing.net)

Consider for a moment that you are taking in billions of bits of information at every moment of the day.  While our logical mind is unaware of that much information, it still makes an imprint on our brain. If we could stop a moment in time and analyze it, we would be amazed.  And yet that very same information is sitting there waiting for us to tap into it and to give us insights which we would not otherwise have.

However, here comes the hard part.  How do you get in touch with that part of you which you do not know about?  Of course there are many different methods and pathways to get in touch with it but one of the ways is through somatic awareness.  Somatic awareness comes when we slow ourselves down far enough and allow our minds and our bodies to connect as one.  Through this time, we merge what the mind knows with what the body senses, feels, smells, tastes and touches.

From Paralysis and Fear Through Touch
By Don Shetterly

Published in the May/June 2005 issue of Massage Message (Bimonthly publication of the FSMTA ), Pgs 24-25

From the article:

"Imagine a 25 year old guy laying in a hospital bed and struggling to talk, move all parts of his body and remember basic things like his name.  There was no car accident and no disease.  The muscles had the same tone in them as they had before this time.

Just days before, this same guy had been an average hard working person just trying to make it in life.  Of course, he had the usual aches and pains that everyone has and he had been getting medical attention to deal with all of this.  Of course most of the doctors didn't have the slightest clue what to do in this situation.  After a severe episode of seizures, he was taken by ambulance to the hospital only to be sent home because they found nothing wrong with him."

Toward a Unified Healing Therapy - Part 2

Dr. Paul Canali, D.C., has spent twenty years developing the work he calls Unified Healing Therapy™ and the Enteric Brain Technique™.  He is well known to the massage community in South Florida.  You can find him at Evolutionary Healing, 6350 Sunset Drive, South Miami, or on the web at www.evolutionaryhealing.net .

In the first part of this interview, Dr. Canali talks about survival mode and what it does to us.  The next part will talk more about his work - how he helps people come out of survival mode and in to a higher level of consciousness.

This interview with Dr. Paul Canali, part 1, was published in the Dade Chapter Newsletter, The Dade Palms of the Florida State Massage Therapy Association.  It was written by Louise Lee, Quayny Porter-Brown and Don Shetterly.

From the article:

"The enteric brain is an open doorway to higher brain learning and body awareness.  By learning how to connect to it you can remove old fears, heal trauma, and deeply relax the body.”

"The results depend on the level of consciousness of the therapist, and the level of healing in the healer, and how well they are able to connect to the body's innate healing network, more than the exact technique employed."

"Coming out of survival is the most important thing for a therapist, because then they can affect changes in others.  They begin activating parts of their biology that were asleep.  The therapist, though, will never ever understand what we are talking about without direct experience.”

"Survival means telling yourself, "I'm Fine. Everything is just fine," but constantly living in denial and convincing yourself that you are safe when the house is actually falling down around you.  ”

From the article:

"Long after the stress is over, our nervous system is reacting as if it's still going on.  The fear and the pain of the past keep us from living in the present.”

"When you see somebody that's been chronically ill, there's almost always an episode that was overwhelming to them, that hurt them.  And from that moment, something in them is shut down."

"Symptoms - disease, pain, discomfort, suffering - are a way of that system trying to get you back online again.  It's like they are saying, Stop with this -- stop with this lifestyle.  It's not normal.  It's not natural.”

"In Western society, we've pushed our nervous systems beyond our normal physiological and biological limits.  Human beings should not be working the number of hours they do and pushing themselves so hard.  ”

Healing Trauma and the Future of the Human Race

Healing Trauma and the Future of the Human Race was published in the October/November 2004 issue of the Dade Palms.  The Dade Palms is the official newsletter of the Dade Chapter, Florida State Massage Therapy Association.  This article was written by Dr. Paul Canali of Evolutionary Healing.

From the article:

"Glen and Mary both suffered from post-traumatic symptoms. Trauma, similar to its insidious cousin chronic stress, changes our biology, affecting our bodies, minds, and spirit. Our brain and nervous system begin to change, freeze and become stuck. There is no peace. We stop growing, trapped in the past, living a day-to-day survival existence. According to experts like Peter A. Levine, “trauma has become so commonplace that we don’t often recognize its presence. Symptoms can remain dormant, accumulating over years or even decades Then, during a stressful period, or as a result of another incident, they can show up without warning. It affects everyone sometime in our lives, regardless of whether it left us with an obvious case of post-traumatic stress.”

Though technology has transformed the external world, little has changed in our internal world, curing one disease is often replaced by creating two. Our conflicts are often settled with violence, and our world is consumed with disease and ego-driven emotions, from anger to greed. In our unconsciousness, we continually hurt ourselves. The trauma cycle continues generation to generation. Glen healed, Mary healed, and with the right support and training, the world can heal."

Reclaiming Healthy Touch

Reclaiming Healthy Touch was a research paper written for college while working towards Don's degree in Massage Therapy at Educating Hands School of Massage.  Written by Don Shetterly.   July 21, 2003
From the introduction:

"There are so many things that are part of our body and that are a direct result of events that have impacted us in many ways.  By becoming more aware of what our body currently experiences, we can connect with these events to free the energy within ourselves and become all that we are.  It is through our patience, sensitivity and creativity as body workers, that we are able to be present for others as they travel down the road of self-awareness toward the world of being the beautiful and whole person that they are."
